Is it safe to use credit card online?

Leather_Rebel asked:

Hi I’m 13 I am asking this question for my mum’s sake, see, I want to buy a megadeth jacket from their online store but since I am in Australia I have to use Credit Card but my mum thinks it isn’t safe so I am not allowed to, even though the site is secure. So I would like to know how could I convince her but first is it safe?

Tell her that people do it all day every day. Try to use a well-known site like Amazon if you can.

Your moms right, but if in the upper left hand conner where it says (that’s a big no to put you credit card number on that page “BUT” if it says (), that little s makes it safe. Always look at the page your ordering from before you put your number down ()=safe…Good Luck

First you have to verify that the website is 100% secure…..you know do your homework on it like ask yahoo or anybody who has used it before if its safe…….then when you find that out show your mom the proof and she should let you.

P.S. make sure you also are on a secure internet connection when using a credit card online

There are a couple of things you can do. Get Mcafee site advisor for your browser. That will tell you if the site you are on is good or not. If the site is new and hasn’t been rated then stay away from it. Also you should be sure your computer is clean. If you have a good Internet Security Suite, and the scans come up clean. You should be ok. Millions of people buy stuff every day and don’t have a problem. Another good idea is to have your Mother set up a paypal account. Use paypal to pay for stuff and you don’t have to worry about your credit card number going to all these different sites.
Have you mom check out paypal and look at the security they use.

save your money for something else. why death? why not life? life is so much better.

it depends. there are junk sites (most of which are really obvious and cheaply done and quite broken), and there are reputable sites. I have found that my experience has been pretty good. even with the one junk site I had an experience with, I got my money back (no product).

it costs money to make a good site.

there have been 2 major incidents in the USA where some major companies have had their credit card databases hacked into and downloaded by someone (I won’t go into details).
so I make it a point not to “save” my credit card information!

I agree with the siteadvisor thing. I have been using it for a long time. it makes the search engines show you an indicator on the site on whether it is good or bad or in-between.

It’s very easy to have a credit card hijacked, especially if your computer isn’t completely free of viruses and spyware. And since it’s her credit that’s at stake, she has every right to be concerned.

It’s difficult to tell if a site is really secure, as you can make an official-looking graphic in any image editor. The only reliable measures are other customers not being ripped off, or an absence of complaints. (If their store shows up with bad press on the first page of search results, you should stay away.)

If you must, check to see if they take PayPal, which is a trustworthy site, and is sometimes accepted in place of a credit card.

[add] The proper address is “https://”, NOT “http://s”!
